FAO GM Foods Platform: recent progress and future direction

Side event to the 38th Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC)

Background

The FAO GM Foods Platform (http://fao.org/gm-platform/) is an online platform to share information on safety assessment of foods derived from recombinant-DNA plants authorized in accordance with the Codex “Guideline for the conduct of food safety assessment of foods derived from recombinant-DNA plants” (CAC/GL 45-2003, annex III adopted in 2008). Each country is responsible for keeping the shared data up-to-date on the Platform. FAO is responsible for management of the Platform.

This side event provided the participants with learning the current progress of the Platform and discussing the future direction of the Platform. The main objectives of the side event were; 1) to create the common understanding of the importance of the Platform; and 2) to share the awareness of the necessity of Codex Members’ initiatives to promote interactive collaboration in the Platform community.
