In reaching its decision on MRLs, the Committee took into account the following: - An ADI of 0-100 µg per kg of body weight was established. This would result in a maximum ADI of 6 mg for a 60 kg person. - The total residues of thiabendazole can be approximated by the sum of the levels of thiabendazole and 5-hydroxythiabendazole and their conjugates. - The sum of the residue levels of thiabendazole and 5-hydroxythiabendazole generally decreases to below 0.1 mgkg in all tissues and milk of animals within a few days of withdrawal. For a total daily food intake from 0.5 kg of edible tissues and 1.5 kg of milk containing 0.1 mg/kg of thiabendazole residues, the theoretical maximum daily intake for veterinary uses of tiabendazole would be:
(0.1 mg/kg X 0.5 kg tissue) + (0.1 mg/kg X 1.5 kg of milk) = 0.2 mg
This figure is much less than the value of 1.4 mg obtained by calculating theoretical maximum daily intakes based on other agricultural uses of thiabendazole. The theoretical maximum daily intake from alluses of thiabendazole corresponds to 27% of the maximum ADI. At the 1975 Joint FAO/WHO meeting on pesticide residues, MRLs had been set for the edible tissues of cattle, goats, horses, pigs, and sheep at 0.1 mg/kg for the sum of thiabendazole and 5-hydroxythiabendazole. The Committee recommended MRLs for thiabendazole plus 5-hydroxy-thiabendazole of 100 µg/kg for all edible tissues of cattle, goats, pigs, and sheep and milk of cattle and goats. Thiabendazole and 5-hydroxythiabendazole are joint marker residues. TRS 832 |
