For well over two decades, the Montréal Process has been building an international community that develops and applies a comprehensive Criteria and Indicators (C&I) framework to assess forest conditions and their sustainability. The 12 member countries (Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, China, Japan, Korea, Mexico, New Zealand, Russia, Uruguay and USA) represent 33 percent of the world’s population and 49 percent of the world’s forest area.

A major focus of the Montréal Process is reporting on C&I at the country level. Countries produce national reports every five years and these reports contribute in numerous ways to countries’ progress towards sustainable forest management (SFM). 

The Montréal Process works actively with other C&I processes and FAO through the CFRQ and other joint activities that promote SFM at international events such as the FAO World Forestry Congresses and the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF). The Montréal Process also works alongside the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) to promote SFM.
