Criteria & Indicators regional workshop in Africa

Douala, Cameroon 27-29 May 2015

This workshop was a key part of the 'Strengthening Criteria and Indicators for Sustainable Forest Management and their use in forest policy and practice'' project, coordinated by FAO and funded by the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture. The project included national, regional and global consultations involving governmental and non-governmental bodies and other stakeholders. It reviewed the use of criteria and indicators (C&I) and examined the needs of stakeholders at local, national, regional and global levels and opportunities to strengthen their use, learning from good examples and lessons learned. The project also aimed to strengthen and further harmonize C&I sets, particularly on socio-economic and governance indicators in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF), FAO Global Forest Resources Assessment and reporting to other forest and forest-related policy processes at global and regional levels.

Goals of the C&I regional workshop

The overall goal of the workshop was to bring together current and potential C&I users to develop a mutual understanding on the best way forward to further develop and use C&I for SFM as a tool for:

  1. Policy dialogue/communication, planning and implementation of regional forest policy programmes and strategies
  2. Monitoring, assessment and reporting on progress towards SFM and on cross-sectoral sustainability aspects, including related to FLEGT, REDD+, sustainable land management
  3. Supporting sustainable forest practices (forest management practice at landscape, community and management unit level, forest investment) and further developing tools to demonstrate sustainability, including forest certification.

Workshop participants, 2015

Expected outputs

  • Increased understanding of the major uses of C&I in Africa at regional, national and forest management unit level (Objective 1: current status of implementation)
  • Identification of common opportunities and challenges in using C&I, experiences, good practices and lessons learned (Objective 2: experiences and lessons learned)
  • Proposed recommendations for strategies/mechanisms to further develop and strengthen the use of C&I in forest policy and practice, with respect to demonstrating the added value of using sustainability forest indicators for different uses, the further development and adaptation of indicators and tools, further promoting collaboration and coordination in monitoring and reporting (incl. harmonization and streamlining reporting), and for mobilization of resources and capacities for using forest sustainability indicators in practice.

The workshops´ outputs and their recommendations provided added value to institutions promoting sustainable forest management in Africa. They had also provided input to the Global Forest Indicators Forum at the XIV World Forestry Congress 2015 in Durban, South Africa.

Workshop organization

The regional workshop was co-organized by the host government and FAO, supported by the respective secretariats of the main regional C&I processes active in the region: The Central Africa Forestry Commission (COMIFAC), the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) and African Timber Organization (ATO).
