NEFRC Bureau Meeting

The event will inform participants about the ongoing activities of the Royal Botanic Gardens of Kew in the framework of its partnership with FAO. Participants will learn about: (i) Kew's Plant Naming Services; (ii) the Millennium Seed Bank Partnership, the World's Tree Seed repository and its partnerships- FAO World Forests Strategy Priority 6; (iii) the ongoing trans-boundary model restoration project under implementation in the framework of the Great Green Wall for the Sahara and the Sahel initiative, Africa's biggest restoration initiative.

In 2011 FAO and the World Bank’s Program on Forests (PROFOR) issued a common framework for assessing and monitoring forest governance. A core group of experts and practitioners, and based on experience of a wide range of applications, has developed further operational guidance. The result "Assessing Forest Governance: A Practical Guide to Data Collection, Analysis & Use”, will be presented at the side-event. This will be followed by a discussion on operational ways to support countries in raising awareness and taking action to measure and assess and to craft blueprints to address findings.

Focus group discussion on FO's publications, covering relevance and quality of content, medium, format, dissemination channels, timeliness and appropriate language versions in order to reach our key target audiences. To attend this meeting, please contact Suzanne Lapstun.

This Side Event is an opportunity to have a dialogue in an informal setting on countries' experiences, successes and challenges in setting up and carrying out a national forest inventory.

The side event will be the official launch of the new FAO Forest and Landscape Restoration (FLR) Mechanism. It will provide the COFO delegates with an opportunity to learn more about the FLR Mechanism, how it will contribute to the Bonn Challenge and Aichi Biodiversity Targets related to ecosystem restoration, in the context of the Global Partnership for Forest and Landscape Restoration. Examples of public and private sector efforts to restore degraded land will be presented from North America, Central America and Southern Africa.

By invitation. Following a request by the Government of the Republic of Congo, the side event will offer an opportunity for countries to discuss the possible agreement of the three rainforest basins.
