The overarching project goal is to build the autonomous capacity of eighteen countries (Non-Annex I Parties) in the following domains:

  • to monitor their forest-related activities in a REDD+ perspective (reduction of emissions due to deforestation and forest degradation, forest carbon stock conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks)
  • to provide information on forestry related subjects (e.g. forest characteristics, biodiversity, forest concessions, annual volume harvested, Forest Stewardship Council certification - FSC, etc.)
  • to report to the different international conventions and agreements

The project will directly support countries to develop the RS/GIS component of the National Forest Monitoring Systems (NFMSs). In addition, the data sharing and information dissemination tools developed through this project will constitute the basis for the information system that the countries should develop to provide information on how the REDD+ safeguards are addressed and respected.
