  • The Afhad University of Women (AUW), founded in 1966, is a private, non-sectarian university for women located in Omdurman. The goal of AUW is to prepare women to assume informed leadership roles in their families, communities and in national and rural development and to achieve equity for women in Sudanese society. Through the Rural Extension Programme, AUW students live in rural areas and plan and participate in projects designed to impart knowledge and organization skills to women living in rural villages to help them become change agents in their communities.
  • Short-term courses in rural development tailored to the needs and interests of rural communities are also developed. Rural women with leadership potential are brought to the Afhad campus for more extensive leadership development. Special courses, lasting from three to nine months, are designed for each group of women. Trainees are awarded certificates upon completion of the courses. Tuition is graduated on an ability-to-pay basis. Waivers are also possible for qualified students. http://www.ahfad.org/index.html
  • The Institute for the Promotion of Civil Society (IPCS) was established in 1999 to strengthen civil society and its administrative and economic environment through education and other supportive activities. The IPCS, located in Rubeke, near Yei, has established a campus on the site of a former refugee camp and has a mobile team available to conduct activities in the field. It trains civic leaders with a particular emphasis on management and economic development. The Institute also serves as a lead organization in the development and standardization of civic and administrative training programmes in the south, producing textbooks and manuals in close cooperation with their target groups. IPCS provides training and capacity building to local communities in order for them to be empowered as active members of civil society (21).
