In South Sudan FAO supports women farmers and entrepreneurs to boost capacities and livelihoods

In South Sudan, FAO leads a programme to empower women in agrifood systems. Many of the women involved in this programme were already farmers or small business owners, who received tailored support from FAO, to improve their skills and capacities and expand their activities. Some women received training in vegetable production and irrigation methods, others received seeds and tools, and many with children under the age of five who experienced malnourishment also received small ruminants to improve nutrition. Under this project, savings and loans associations were also created to increase their economic empowerment.

During the International Year of the Woman Farmer 2026, FAO aims to raise awareness of the innovative practices and diverse contributions of women in agrifood systems, all along the value chain. Celebrating women farmers in South Sudan!
