Kuwait contributes USD 2 million to support FAO emergency operations in Yemen
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Government of Kuwait consolidate their partnership to improve the food security situation of conflict-affected populations in Yemen.
During a bilateral meeting that was held this morning at the Kuwait’s Mission in Geneva, H.E. Jamal Al-Ghunaim, Permanent Representative of the State of Kuwait to the United Nations has donated two million US dollars to FAO's efforts in support of people facing severe food insecurity and malnutrition in Yemen.
"This new agreement reinforces the relationship between the State of Kuwait and FAO," said Ambassador Ghunaim. "We aim to work closer together to accelerate humanitarian efforts towards the people of Yemen and other countries in the near East region who are suffering from conflicts."
Ms Carolyn Rodrigues Birkett, Director of the FAO Liaison Office in Geneva accepted Kuwait’s contribution on behalf of FAO and discussed with Ambassador Ghunaim the humanitarian situation in Yemen as the country is facing the world’s largest humanitarian crisis.
“We welcome the reinforced collaboration between the State of Kuwait and FAO", Ms Rodrigues Birkett highlighted. This generous contribution of USD 2 million is very important and timely to help FAO increase its efforts in Yemen. It will contribute to secure and restore agricultural livelihoods, promote self-reliance and improve the food security of almost 9 million people.”
