30/09/2020

FAO joins hands with global community in commemorations of the second World Cotton Day on 7 October 2020.

“World Cotton Day celebration represents a unique occasion to highlight the important role cotton plays in fighting poverty and hunger and to confirm our commitment to work hand in hand towards a more dynamic, innovative, inclusive and sustainable sector for current and future generations,” says FAO Director-General QU Dongyu.

The celebration of the World Cotton Day was launched in 2019 at the initiative of the Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad and Mali, members of the Cotton-4 countries group, and hosted by the World Trade Organization (WTO), with support of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the International Trade Centre (ITC) and the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC). Cotton-4 countries have also submitted a resolution in the United Nations General Assembly for declaring 7 October the World Cotton Day formally.

For the second consecutive year, the commemorations will be an opportunity to raise awareness of the critical importance of the cotton sector for farmers and to the society. Cotton sector makes a valuable contribution to the three dimensions of sustainability namely economic, social and environmental and to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. FAO will be engaging, with partners, in regional activities including a Latin America – Africa webinar available (in Portuguese and Spanish only). Read more details here.
