FAO-WFP Joint Monthly Briefings on the global food security situation

08/09/2021

On 8 September, FAO and WFP held their fifth joint briefing. Haiti was one the agenda, together with a brief update on the Food Systems Summit. With over 46% of the population facing high levels of acute food insecurity (IPC Phase 3 or above), Haiti is one of the world’s largest food crises. The continual rise in the numbers of people in Crisis or worse since 2017 results from a repetition of shocks, i.e. drought, economicturmoil, insecurity stemming from civil unrest as well as structural vulnerability. Food access and availability are expected to deteriorate in the coming months, driven by a combination of economic decline and currency depreciation, and a series of poor consecutive harvests which have deprived farmers of agricultural inputs for the coming season. In addition to the dire food security situation in Haiti, the briefing highlighted the pivotal role agriculture plays in the economy of the country, a sector which employs two third of the country’s labour force. The next joint FAO-WFP briefing will take place on 6 October from 11:00-12:30 CET.
