Leveraging Space Technology for Agricultural Development and Food Security" on Friday, 7 February 2025, from 14.00 to 15.00.

07/02/2025 - 07/02/2025

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) will launch their latest collaborative effort, the publication “Leveraging Space Technology for Agricultural Development and Food Security.”

The side event co-organized by FAO and UNOOSA, entitled “Leveraging Space Technology for Agricultural Development and Food Security” on Friday, 7 February 2025, from 14.00 to 15.00 in Room M3 at the Vienna International Centre and virtually.

Space technologies such as satellite imagery and global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) are integral to modern agriculture. They provide high-resolution data essential for precision agriculture, effective water management, crop monitoring and accurate weather forecasting, thereby supporting informed decision-making and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

This publication, developed by UNOOSA and FAO, outlines challenges and provides recommendations for enhancing the use of space technology in agriculture, including: tailoring technologies to specific needs, improving Earth observation missions, addressing data gaps and implementing measures to promote sustainable space development. It aims to support sustainable development and the 2030 Agenda by integrating GNSS and remote-sensing technologies with agricultural practices.
