EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
A data preparation meeting on Black Seapriority species was held in Constanta, Romania, in hybrid modality, on 10–14 June 2024. The meeting was attended by 28 participants from Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria, Türkiye and the European Commission, as well as from FAO and the GFCM Secretariat. The main objective of this meeting was to provide a platform to review, discuss and analyse the fishery-dependent and fishery-independent input data for the assessments ofhorse mackerel (Trachurus mediterraneus), turbot (Scophthalmus maximus), whiting (Merlangius merlangus), red mullet (Mullus barbatus), piked dogfish (Squalus acanthias) and rapa whelk (Rapana venosa) in preparation for the tenth meeting of the Subregional Group on Stock Assessment for the Black Sea (SGSABS), to be held on 8–13 July 2024. To address the data issues highlighted by the Group, a roadmap for each stock was elaborated, including recommendations for performing the stock assessment. Additionally, the meeting included a discussion of the plausible life-history parameters of the rapa whelk stock that would help to condition the operating model as part of the data-limited management strategy evaluation (MSE). This work followed from the rapa whelk roadmap presented on 9 May 2024.
