Guatemala consolidates political commitment to follow a roadmap towards a collaborative forest monitoring system

08/05/2026

Guatemala is steadily advancing toward the implementation of its National Forest Monitoring System (NFMS) Roadmap through a structured, country-led and interinstitutional process rooted in both technical coordination and political commitment.

The process began with a clear national interest in developing a shared NFMS Roadmap as a guiding framework to strengthen coherence, coordination and long-term sustainability of forest monitoring activities. This initial momentum led to a coordinated interinstitutional effort to jointly prepare the roadmap, thus aligning priorities and institutional mandates among the key national institutions leading the process – namely the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN), the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA), the National Forest Institute (INAB) and the National Council of Protected Areas (CONAP).

The process was subsequently reinforced by an explicit political signal: national authorities formally designated the units responsible for leading the follow up and implementation of the roadmap, providing clarity on roles, ownership and accountability. This step marked an important transition from planning to action.

Building on this foundation, an interinstitutional coordination workshop held on 22 April 2026 served as a key milestone to operationalize the roadmap. The workshop was convened by MARN, bringing together the four leading institutions to align priorities, confirm institutional responsibilities and agree on the next concrete steps for coordinated progress.

This progress reflects Guatemala’s sustained commitment to a functional, coherent and nationally led NFMS, grounded in interinstitutional collaboration and supported by clear political backing – laying the groundwork for informed forest and climate related decisions for the future.

The Country Led Planning (CLP) programme of the Global Forest Observations Initiative (GFOI) is supporting the facilitation of the CLP process in Guatemala, at the request of national institutions. The GFOI CLP programme of support is implemented by the GFOI Office with funding from the AIM4Forests programme of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, which is funded by the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland’s Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.
