Learning opportunities for all: Strengthening forest data for better reporting

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), a lead partner of the Global Forest Observations Initiative (GFOI), is hosting the webinar Learning opportunities for all: Strengthening forest data for better reporting.” Held from 13.30 to 14.15 CET on 26 November 2024, the webinar was developed as a part of the Accelerating Innovative Monitoring for Forests (AIM4Forests) programme and the “Building global capacity to increase transparency in the forest sector (CBIT-Forest)” project. For this webinar, viewers can look forward to a presentation on the FAO eLearning Academy series of courses “Forest Monitoring for Climate Action”, including the results from the recently delivered National Forest Inventory (NFI) online facilitated course. The series of courses are developed jointly with the FAO eLearning Academy and FAO’s Forestry Division. It is freely available in multiple languages to anyone who wants to strengthen their technical and institutional capacities on forest data for better reporting. The interactive webinar will include testimonials from government representatives, academia and other stakeholder groups on the use of the e-learning materials in their daily work.

Moderated by Ms Ghislaine Gill, Forest Monitoring Specialist (FAO), the agenda of the webinar is as follows:

  • Welcome and introductory remarks: Ms Ghislaine Gill
  • Presentation of FAO’s NFI support: Ms Rebecca Tavani, Forestry Officer (FAO) – 10 minutes
  • Presentation of e-Learning series, including results from the NFI online facilitated course: Ms Rocío Cóndor, Forestry Officer (FAO) – 10 minutes
    • Experience from testimonial (Kenya) – 5 minutes
    • Experience from testimonial (Benin) – 5 minutes
  • Q&A session – 10 minutes
  • Closing remarks: Ms Ghislaine Gill – 5 minutes

This webinar is being held in parallel with the weeklong series of workshops that FAO is hosting at its headquarters in Rome, Italy, from 25 to 28 November 2024 in collaboration with GFOI partners. The global forum, titled Enhancing forest monitoring through global collaboration: A south-south knowledge exchange, will see experts from tropical forest countries and the international community gather to discuss three key topics:

  • the technical and methodological aspects of emissions measurement, reporting and verification;
  • monitoring for transparent commodity value chains; and
  • country-led planning for sustaining national forest monitoring systems within national institutions.
