GFOI R&D Exchange: Monitoring tropical peatlands and mangroves

Location
Online
18 February 2025 - 18 February 2025

The Global Forest Observations Initiative (GFOI) Research and Development (R&D) Coordination Component is hosting the second session of its virtual GFOI R&D Exchanges, "Monitoring tropical peatlands and mangroves", on 18 February 2025 from 14.00 to 15.30 CET (GMT +1.00). Space is limited – register here to secure your spot.

The GFOI R&D Exchanges are an online series of dynamic meetings to foster discussions on evolving forest monitoring methods and their applications in national forest monitoring systems. These sessions serve as a platform for our research community and interested stakeholders to exchange insights on recent research achievements and persisting gaps.

In this second session, we will discuss the key principles and critical aspects of wetland monitoring, including how wetlands are incorporated in nationally determined contributions (NDCs) and what differentiates them from other ecosystems. The GFOI R&D Tropical Wetland leads from the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) will share their insights, along with key experts from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and partners of the Global Mangrove Watch. Attendees will also learn about scientific approaches for developing peat greenhouse gas emission factor estimation, as well as the latest advancements in global and regional mangrove monitoring.

We look forward to your participation and contribution to these important discussions. For those who cannot attend, this exchange will be recorded. Please click here to register today.
