GFOI R&D Exchange: Insights on degradation and regrowth

The Global Forest Observations Initiative (GFOI) Research and Development (R&D) Coordination Component is hosting the third session of its virtual GFOI R&D Exchanges, “Insights on degradation and regrowth: From research to reporting,” on 30 June 2025 from 16.00 to 18.00 CEST (GMT +2.00). Space is limited – register here to secure your spot.
The GFOI R&D Exchanges are an online series of dynamic meetings to foster discussions on evolving forest monitoring methods and their applications in national forest monitoring systems. These sessions serve as a platform for our research community and interested stakeholders to exchange insights on recent research achievements and persisting gaps.
In this session, we will discuss recent research achievements for assessing degradation and regrowth carbon fluxes, national methodologies to monitor these fluxes, challenges faced by countries and how science could help improve country reporting. Facilitated by Robert Kennedy (Oregon State University) and Marieke Sandker (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations [FAO]), the agenda includes the following presentations:
- Quantification of post-disturbance carbon fluxes in tropical moist forest - Viola Heinrich (GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences);
- Tracking carbon dynamics of standing forests with AI and ground-sourced data - Jingjing Liang (Purdue University);
- Overview of country approaches to assess emissions and removals from forest degradation – Till Neeff (FAO); and
- Guatemala’s progress in assessing degradation and regrowth in standing forest for UNFCCC reporting and carbon accounting – Guatemala.
Participants will have the chance to engage with the R&D community on this fascinating topic through interactive polls and live Q&A. For those who cannot attend, this exchange will be recorded. Please click here to register today.
