Countries are working to advance forest monitoring for emissions and removals measurement, reporting and verification (MRV). The objective of MRV is typically to quantify the country’s contribution to achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement and to gain access to climate finance. The Global Forest Observations Initiative (GFOI) is facilitating a process for country-led planning (CLP) where countries work towards building institutions and strengthening functional aspects of forest monitoring.

The "GFOI session on tropical forest monitoring," an Agora Session at the Living Planet Symposium of the European Space Agency (ESA), will be held 24 June 2025 from 11:30 to 13:00. The principal objective of this agora session is to advance knowledge exchange and joint learning among countries on technical aspects surrounding forest MRV. A broader discussion between science and practical implementation will be fostered.
