International Day of Forests - Forests and Education

21 March 2019

Proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in a 2012 Resolution and celebrated annually on 21 March, the International Day of Forests (IDF) celebrates and raises awareness of the importance of all types of forests.

On each IDF, countries are encouraged to organize tree planting campaigns or other activities involving forests and trees.

In 2019, IDF will be celebrated under the theme Forests and Education. By investing in forestry education, countries are taking major steps towards developing a cadre of scientists, policy makers, foresters and local communities who can address the challenges of combating climate change and its impacts, while ensuring that both today's and future generations have forests and lands that are rich in biodiversity, secure sources of food, water and fuel, and natural protectors of the environment.
