Background

This side event is part of the broader launch of the UK funded AIM4Forest programme, with emphasis on its engagement and capacity development for Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities.

There is an increasing recognition of the role of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities in the forests and climate agenda, and this has been recognized with opportunities under emerging standards such as ART-TREES. However, their capacity for forest and land monitoring and MRV presents a barrier to this participation. This panel will launch a first reflection on how Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities can be empowered to strengthen their participation in forest and land monitoring and MRV under the new AIM4Forests programme. For more information on AIM4Forests see the press release, the website and the flyer.

Objectives

  •         To inform the GFOI community about the Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities capacity development component of AIM4Forests and collect feedback.
  • To give the floor to Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities and increase understanding of community-level activities, capacities, priorities and needs.
  • To facilitate exchange and initiate discussions for targeted follow-up.
