An introduction to the concept of governance

This session was designed as a broad introduction to the concept of governance – its historical origins, its evolution within international development cooperation, how it is interpreted and applied by global institutions, and its relevance and practical use within the Country-Led Planning (CLP) programme of the Global Forest Observations Initiative (GFOI). It was conceived as the first in a series of three closely connected sessions, which together would build toward a detailed examination of the CLP Functional Gap Assessment Tool.

CLP knowledge-sharing sessions arose to universalize specific areas of expertise critical to the CLP programme of the GFOI. The CLP team is therefore engaging in a valuable internal learning process through this series to combine strong theoretical grounding with practical experience directly relevant to supporting countries engaged in CLP with the GFOI. Although the sessions are internal, the expert presentations given during the sessions are being made public as learning opportunities for those interested in topics central to sustainable CLP, such as governance and political economy analysis.
