New Criteria for selection of GIAHS sites will be applied from 1st January 2017

During the Second Meeting of the Scientific Advisory Group (SAG), held in Rome from 10 to 12 October 2016, new criteria for selection and Action Plan were discussed. As a result of a deep discussion and considering the GIAHS experience in the past years of implementation of the concept, the Members of SAG have revised and updated the GIAHS Selection criteria. The new criteria will become operational in 2017. All the countries starting the preparation of a GIAHS proposal from 1st January 2017, must follow the new criteria. Guidelines for implementing the new criteria will be developed in the next SAG meeting, which will take place in February 2017. To download the document, click here

Third International Training on GIAHS successfully concluded

Following the first training experience, held in 2014 and 2015, FAO and the Ministry of Agriculture of the People’s Republic of China, have conducted this Third High Level Training on GIAHS, with the participation of delegates from 17 countries, covering Latin America, Africa, Middle East and North Africa, Central and East Asia, and the Pacific. Dates production System in Siwa Oasis is designated as GIAHS site

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nation (FAO) awarded the Dates Production Sector in Siwa Oasis, the Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) Certificate which makes the Oasis a globally important agricultural heritage system because it preserved the environmental and heritage ecosystem in the cultivation of Dates. MOU on GIAHS is signed between FAO and Italy

The Italian Minister of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies, Maurizio Martina, and FAO Director-General, Dr. José Graziano da Silva, signed a five-year Memorandum of Understanding with the aim of promoting GIAHS in Italy. The MOU envisages to develop research activities regarding the role of traditional landscapes and rural practices related to agriculture, forestry, fishery, pasture and rangelands as approaches to dealing with climate change. Side Event: "Recognizing the role of Agricultural Heritage Systems in Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development (GIAHS)"

The side event will provide an opportunity to discuss the fundamental issues related to GIAHS with permanent representatives and delegates to COAG. Moreover, it will be an occasion for sharing concrete experiences and lessons learned from the implementation of GIAHS, including the challenges faced by GIAHS member countries, as well as the benefits derived from their recognition. The First Meeting of the GIAHS Scientific Advisory Group, 22-23 February 2016
