In occasion of the 6th meeting of the GIAHS Scientific Advisory Group (SAG), the first GIAHS site from Portugal, Barroso Agro-Sylvo-Pastoral system has been designated. It is also a third European and Central Asia Region.

In occasion of the 6th meeting of the GIAHS Scientific Advisory Group (SAG), from 8 to 9 March 2018, 2 new agricultural systems in Japan were approved and designated as Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems:
- Nishi-Awa Steep Slope Land Agriculture System
- Traditional Wasabi Cultivation in Shizuoka
