تدعم نُظم التراث الزراعي ذات الأهمية العالمية، التي هي عبارة عن مناظر طبيعية مذهلة تتطوّر على مدى قرون من الزمن، المجتمعات وثقافاتها في آنٍ واحد. وتنطوي هذه النظم على علاقة تكافلية بين المشهد الزراعي والبيئة الاجتماعية الأوسع. وبقدر ما تعتمد المجتمعات على هذه النظم الإيكولوجية من أجل تأمين سبل عيشها، فإن صون هذه النظم الإيكولوجية يعتمد على المعارف التقليدية لهذه المجتمعات وعلى ممارساتها المستدامة.
