Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS)

GIAHS National Workshop in Austria

This workshop was attended by officers from the Ministry of Sustainability and Tourism, researchers of HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein, representatives of local governments, farmer’s organizations, NGOs and the private sector.

After opening remarks by Mr. Hausleitner, Headmaster of HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein and Mr. Kucera, Director of the Federal Ministry, the GIAHS Coordinator of FAO, Mr. Endo, made a comprehensive presentation on GIAHS including its concepts, actual GIAHS sites in the world, concrete measures for action plan for dynamic conservation and potential merits arising from GIAHS designation.

Mr. Graiss and Mr. Albin Blaschka, researchers at HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein as well as contact points for GIAHS in Austria, explained about existing actions on GIAHS, as well as a grassland-based livestock system as an example ofpotential GIAHS site in the country.

Ms. Obenhuber from Austrian UNESCO Commission introduced intangible cultural heritage sites where agricultural knowledge to manage irrigation or natural resources were registered. 

Finally, it was confirmed that the communication and collaboration between GIAHS Secretariat and GIAHS contact points in Austria will continue, expecting the preparationand submission of the first GIAHS proposal soon.
