The Agcoecology Knowledge Hub at FAO published one case study in a Japanese GIAHS site (Sado Island) and demonstrated how GIAHS's dynamic conservation and agroecology can work for not only agroecosystem and biodiversity but also the farmers. 

The Japanese GIAHS site, "Sado's Satoyama in Harmony with the Japanese Crested Ibis" was designated as GIAHS in 2011 for the first time in Japan. Since the designation, local people have worked together to maintain and improve the environment of the island through minimizing the use of agricultural chemicals, pesticides and chemical fertilizer so as to nurture feeding habitats for the Japanese crested Ibis.

On the other hand, farmers have achieved higher price for rice grown by certifying rice production that has met the certain conditions to secure feeding grounds for the Japanese crested Ibis.
