GIAHS experiences with the Global Environment Facility (GEF)

A recent article of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) highlighted the critical inputs provided during the initial development of the GIAHS Programme, as well as the results achieved over time.

Indeed, at the outset of the GIAHS Initiative, the GEF was a key player of the global partnership that contributed to the implementation of the project “Conservation and Adaptive Management of Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems”, which focused on eight GIAHS sites in six pilot countries. The project, which completed in 2014, allowed the GIAHS system to move from conceptual framework to a concrete activity.

Rural communities were empowered and benefited from the GIAHS approach through the GEF Project, in particular in the following sites: Chiloe Island, Chile; Andean Agriculture in Cusco-Puno Corridor, Peru; Ghout Oasis in Algeria and the Historical Oasis of Gafsa, Tunisia; Rice-Fish Culture, Hani Rice Terraces and Torreya Tree System, in China; and the Ifugao Rice Terraces in the Philippines.
