FAO and the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy (the Friedman School) at Tufts University have entered into a collaboration aiming to increase our understanding of what foods and nutrients people are actually consuming around the world.

Another round of webinars will be conducted this year with the aim of presenting the new prototype of the FAO/WHO GIFT platform to potential end-users and collect their feedback. The webinars will also provide an update on the status of collection, collation and dissemination of dietary data.

The Accelerated Reduction Effort on Anaemia (AREA) Community of Practice held a webinar in December 2017 on how the FAO/WHO GIFT platform may strengthen food-based approaches to reduce iron deficiency.

The FAO/WHO GIFT platform was presented to a wider audience in the UN Network for SUN webinar series in March 2018.

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) held two webinars on the use of the FoodEx2 classification system in September and October 2018. FoodEx2 is a comprehensive food classification and description system aimed at covering the need to describe foods in a harmonised way.

A new round of participatory webinars will take place in March 2019 to walk users through the new features of the FAO/WHO GIFT platform.

An open access article on the FAO/WHO GIFT platform has been published in the Proceedings of the Nutrition Society.

A webinar session in Spanish will take place on the 6th of August 2019 to walk users through the new features of the FAO/WHO GIFT platform.

The FAO/WHO GIFT platform is funded in part by a four-year grant (2018–2022) from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, aimed at transforming the platform into a robust global tool.

The FAO/WHO GIFT platform now has 10 datasets available. You can now access ready-to-use infographics and download the full microdata of 3 nationwide surveys and 7 sub-national surveys from different countries.

FAO and the Intake Center for Dietary Assessment have jointly convened a meeting about “Dietary Data Collection, Analysis and Use: Taking Stock of Country Experiences and Promising Practices in Low- and Middle-Income Countries” on 11–13 December 2019 at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy.

This Call for Expression of Interest, issued by FAO, is to identify institutions from low- and middle-income countries, with access to Individual Quantitative Food Consumption (IQFC) data that could be shared through the FAO/WHO GIFT platform.

The Food and Nutrition Division at FAO led a 3-week training course with 25 participants gathered in Vientiane, Lao PDR and others on Zoom to explain how to use dietary data.
