Trainings on wet chemistry

Trainings on wet chemistry focus on the implementation of the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) harmonized by GLOSOLAN and the technical manuals released by the network since its establishment in 2017. Training topics range from the preparation of the soil samples for analysis to health and safety, and the procurement, functioning and maintenance of laboratory equipment.

GLOSOLAN's top-experts on each topic will guide participants through the execution of each GLOSOLAN procedure with the support audio visual material where available. GLOSOLAN partners from the industry will be invited to answer participants questions on equipment functioning and maintenance. 

Participants will have the chance to interact with the lecturers by asking questions and by reporting real case examples from their laboratory.

Guest speaker: Jorge D. Etchevers and Claudia Hidalgo, Members of the scientific staff of the Laboratorio de Fertilidad de Suelos y Química Ambiental at Colegio de Postgraduados in Montecillo, Mexico

Biography:  J. D. Etchevers is a Ph. D. who graduated from North Dakota State University with more than 50 years of experience in soil chemical analyses.  He has worked in several Latin-American countries and in the USA. He has accomplished sabbatical years and short-term stages in various European countries. He is a member of the Mexican Academy of Science, Professor Emeritus of the Colegio de Postgraduados, and National Researcher Emeritus of the Mexican National System of Researchers. Dr. Etchevers has received numerous recognitions from the State of Mexico and professional and scientific societies of the continent. The soil analytical laboratory under his direction performs traditional soil chemical routines for evaluating soil fertility and, in addition, conducts research employing X rays, chromatographic (liquid and gas), potentiometric, TEM, and SEM microscopy techniques, among others.

Biography: Claudia Hidalgo is Dr. of Science who graduated from the Université de Nancy, France, with more than 30 years of experience in soil science, particularly in analytical chemistry and clay minerals. She has spent a sabbatical year in Spain and short-term stances in Europe and Latin American countries. She is a Full Professor of Soil Science at the Colegio de Postgraduados, Mexico, and a Mexican Soil Science Society member. Dr. Hidalgo is also a member of the Mexican National System of Researchers. Her main interest is in soil chemistry, particularly soil carbon and organic matter analysis, and the interaction of both with the inorganic clay minerals. She was responsible of the soil analytical facility at her institution for several years and has been an essential part of the Mexican soil analytical quality control program. In addition to her knowledge of soil analytical determinations, she operates the X-ray section, IR spectroscopy (MIR, NIR) and the automatized carbon and nitrogen facilities at the Colegio de Postgraduados soil fertility laboratory.

Abstract: This webinar presents how to measure soil phosphorous by Olsen method, following the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) harmonized by GLOSOLAN in 2021. The lecturers will provide an insight of the procedure, describing each step of the measurement, from sample preparation to quality assurance and control, focusing also on the health and safety measures. Participants will have the chance to raise questions and directly interact with the speakers in a Q&A session at the end of the presentation.

Guest speaker: Marija Romic (Faculty of Agriculture, University of Zagreb, Croatia), Riham Zahalan (General Commission for Scientific Agricultural Research- GCSAR, Syria), Muhammad Manhal Al-Zoubi (Natural Resources Research Administration (ANRR), Syria)

Biography: Marija Romic, PhD, is a Full Professor at the University of Zagreb Faculty of Agriculture and the main fields of the scientific interest are physical and chemical processes and analytical procedures in environmental studies of soil and sediments, water and plant material. She've been organizing a number of university summer schools, short courses and conferences in Croatia and abroad, visiting professor at many foreign univeristies, and invited speaker on international conferences dealing with soil science and environmental chemistry. She’s a head of the Analytical laboratory for the environmental chemistry and she's responsible for the application of the QC/QA and accreditation according the international standard ISO 17025. Marija has been elected in October 2021 as new Chair of the European  and Eurasian Soil Laboratory Network (EUROSOLAN). 

Biography: Riham Zahalan has a PhD in soil physics-rural engineering from the Faculty of Agriculture of Damascus University. 2020. Riham is the head of soil Maintenance and Reclamation Department in ANRR-GCSAR: working on sustainable use of agricultural soils. Her main research areas focus on the importance of soil health, physical conditions, soil organic matter, organic carbon and carbon sequestration. Riham is also the Head of the external soil laboratories in Syria. In this regard, she is constantly monitoring their work and needs and in charge of organizing training sessions. She is currently serving as the Vice-Chair of the Near East and North African Soil Laboratory Network (NENALAB) and collaborates with other GSP’s technical networks such as INFA and INSAS.

Biography: Muhammad Manhal Al-Zoubi, PhD, is the Director of Natural Resources Research Administration (ANRR) of Syria. Manhal is an expert at The Arab Center for the Studies of Arid Zones and Dry Lands (ACSAD) and is currently serving as lecturer at Damascus University. Moreover, he is also the Syrian focal point at Global Soil Partnership GSP- FAO.

Nilo is the current Assistant Director of the Bureau of Soils and Water Management (BSWM) and the former Chief of the Laboratory Services Division (LSD) of the Bureau of Soils and Water Management (BSWM) with 40 years of experience in the field of soil science. She is the main author of the GLOSOLAN SOP for Soil Organic Carbon (Walkley-Black) for Titrimetric and Colorimetric Method. Additionally, she is the current Chair of the Asian Soil Laboratory Network (SEALNET) for the second term (2021-2023). Aside from this, she serves as the Quality Manager of the LSD and an authorized signatory of the Philippine Accreditation Bureau (PAB) for all of the parameters of the LSD for the following scope: 1) Soil; 2) Fertilizer; and 3) Irrigation Stock.

Ms. Jimenez, is also an authorized signatory of the Philippine Accreditation Bureau (PAB) for the analysis of Soil Organic Carbon.

Biography: Ms Lyra Espectacion is a Registered Chemist from the Soil Chemistry Section of the Laboratory Services Division (LSD) of the  Bureau of Soils and Water Management (BSWM) in the Philippines. She is a skilled Chemist equipped with a solid chemistry background and four years laboratory experience. Additionally, she is an authorized signatory of the Philippine Accreditation Bureau (PAB) on the determination of Soil Available P for Olsen and Bray I Method, pH, EC, and Total Nitrogen parameters.

Biography: Ms Florfina Sanchez is the current Soil Chemistry Chief and a  Registered Chemist from the Laboratory Services Division (LSD) of the Bureau of Soils and Water Management (BSWM) in the Philippines. She has 20 years of experience in soil chemical analysis, including performance checks of laboratory equipment used in the analysis, supervising the implementation of  quality assurance system and the requisition of chemicals and supplies, conduct of soil chemistry analysis, and the evaluation for the upgrading of laboratory equipment. Ms. Sanchez is also an authorized signatory of the Philippine Accreditation Bureau (PAB) for all the soil analysis of LSD, specifically pH, Electrical Conductivity, Total Nitrogen, Phosphorus Olsen Method, Phosphorus Bray 1 method, Organic Carbon/Organic Matter, Potassium, Magnesium, Sodium, Calcium, Zinc, Iron, Manganese, and Copper.

Biography: Ms Lesego Mooketsi-Selepe is the Laboratory Coordinator of Soil and Plant Analytical Laboratory in the Department of Agricultural Research, Ministry of Agricultural Development and Food Security, Botswana. She has over thirty years of laboratory and laboratory management experience from increasing scope of responsibilities, starting at laboratory assistant level to current position of coordinating. She gained experience in training and coaching of laboratory personnel through mentoring of supervisees in running analytical procedures, procurement process, and equipment maintenance and during introduction and implementation of Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). She holds a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Chemistry with Analytical Chemistry attained from The University of Manchester, United Kingdom (UK) in 2007 and a National Diploma in Science, which she attained from Guilford College of Technology, UK in 1990. 

Biography: Mr Joseph Uponi is a manager at the Analytical Service Laboratory at International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, Ibadan. A Fellow of the Institute of Public Analysts of Nigeria, Laboratory Auditor, Pioneer Chairman of GLOSOLAN-AFRILAB-Regional Soil Laboratory Network for Africa. Registered Soil Scientist. Experienced in installation, calibration and preventive maintenance of various laboratory equipment. Involved in capacity building for laboratory scientists in Nigeria and other African countries. Skilled in project management. Involved in development of crop specific fertilizers and fertilizer quality verifications. 

Abstract: This webinar presents how to handle and prepare soil samples prior to chemical and physical analysis, following the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) harmonized by GLOSOLAN in 2020. The lecturers will provide a guidance for each step of the procedure, to ensure sample material is prepared in a reproducible manner to achieve a representative portion for analysis. Biography: Dr Sougueh Cheik Sougueh is a soil researcher at the Research and Studies Center of Djibouti (CERD). He is involved in questions related to the description, characterization and prioritization of edaphic constraints in arid tropical ecosystems, particularly in Djibouti (East Africa). He is passionate about soil science and agroecology. 

Biography: Elh Moudi Moustapha Abdourahaman is a soil conservation specialist, currently working at the Soil, Water and Plant Laboratory (LASEVE) at the National Institute of Agricultural Research of Niger (INRAN). He is also working on new technologies application in soil analysis, soil suitability studies and soil mapping. 

Abstract: Ce webinaire présente comment manipuler et préparer les échantillons de sol avant l'analyse chimique et physique, en suivant la procédure opérationnelle standard (SOP) harmonisée par GLOSOLAN en 2020. Biography: Neil Ivan Baribe is a biochemist and Registered Chemical Technician in the Philippines from the Soil Chemistry Section of the Laboratory Services Division (LSD) of the Bureau of Soils and Water Management (BSWM) in the Philippines. He is an experienced Chemical Technician with five-out-of-five proficiency test participation for Soil Electrical Conductivity with z-scores less than 2.

He is an authorized signatory of the Philippines Accreditation Bureau (PAB) for the analysis of Soil pH and Electrical Conductivity (EC).
