ICAR-Indian Institute of Soil Science (ICAR-IISS), Bhopal, India, is a premier institute, under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Govt of India, dedicated to soil research in India since last three decades. The institute is working on soil spectroscopy in collaboration with World Agroforestry (ICRAF), Nairobi, Kenya.  It has developed a spectral library for major soil orders of India, namely Vertisols, Alfisols, and Inceptisols and machine learning-based chemometric models to retrieve soil properties from the soil spectral library. ICAR-IISS also developed expertise in various facets of soil spectroscopy, including data collection, wet and dry chemistry, and machine learning approaches, and is capable to support other regional laboratories across Asia. The institute is endowed with well-equipped laboratories for analysis of soil parameters and processes.

Recently, ICAR-IISS and World Agroforestry (ICRAF) jointly organized an “International Webinar on Soil Spectroscopy- An Emerging Technique for Rapid Soil Health Assessment” on 1st October 2020. More than 2000 participants from various countries registered for the webinar, representing 28 countries from scientific, educational, and private & public research institutions worldwide and 850 actively attended the webinar.

With this back drop plus the expertise gained by the group of scientists working here in various aspects of soil spectroscopy viz. NIR, MIR,  xRF and hyperspectral remote sensing, drone and UAVs mounted with spectroscopes, shall give an extra mile benefit to the soil spectroscopy research backstop within and outside Asia.
