This year’s contest was focused on World Soil Day 2022 theme: “Soils: where food begins”. The objective was to create colourful artworks that tell the story of soils for nutrition and soil fertility, emphasizing the link between soils, food production, nutrition and healthy diets.  

The contest aims to promote educational activities, engagement and participation of children and schools in soil science. By doing so, children around the world could develop a  greater empathy towards soils and a better understanding of soils, our silent allies. During the creation of the artwork, children get a chance to reflect on the different types of links and challenges posed by unhealthy soils regarding food security, nutrition, and human well-being. They are also able to express how soil health and soil threats have affected their daily lives, and share it with the rest of the world! 

All young people who care about nature and soil and wanted to take part in this challenge were invited to participate. Schools and colleges have also competed, and the FAO's Global Soil Partnership received more than 160 posters from children all around the world! 

Out of all contest entries, the Jury shortlisted the best 10 drawings under each category: 

Category A | age range between 5-10 years old 

Category B | age range between 10-14 years old

The public voting closes on 5 December at 11:00 AM (CET). The winners will be announced during the World Soil Day Official Ceremony on Monday, 5 December 2022 from 12:20 to 13:45 (CET).
