On 9 and 10 July 2025, the Twelfth Plenary Assembly of the Regional Soil Partnership for Latin America and the Caribbean (ASLAC) was held virtually, constituting a key space for consolidating regional efforts in favour of sustainable soil management. More than 102 partners and focal points from 20 countries participated in this important meeting, which was coordinated and moderated by Carolina Olivera Sánchez, and Natalia Rodriguez Eugenio, ASLAC coordinators from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)’s Global Soil Partnership (GSP).

Harare - Two transformative initiatives were officially launched in Zimbabwe, aimed at empowering the country to sustainably manage its soil and water resources. The two projects: “Capacity Development on Sustainable Soil Management in the Global South” and “National Water Roadmap towards 2030 Sustainable Development Goals” focus on sustainable soil management and water governance and are designed to accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through enhanced technical capacity, inclusive governance, and South-South cooperation.

As droughts in Armenia escalate in intensity and duration, the country’s soils become increasingly vulnerable to erosion and degradation. In response, farmers, soil scientists, and government representatives are working together to adopt sustainable soil management (SSM) practices that promote climate change adaptation and mitigation. To advance these efforts, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nation's (FAO), through its Global Soil Partnership, is implementing a pilot project of the Recarbonization of Agricultural Soils (RECSOIL) initiative. In collaboration with FAO Armenia and the Armenian National Agrarian University (ANAU), the project aims to restore soil health, promote soil recarbonization to address land degradation and build more resilient agrifood systems.

The Thirteenth Plenary Assembly of the Global Soil Partnership (GSP) was held from 3 to 5 June at FAO headquarters in Rome. As the decision-making body of the GSP, the Assembly seeks to exchange knowledge and experiences, take crucial decisions, and shape the global soil agenda. This year, the event coincided with FAO’s 80th anniversary and featured high-level speakers from around the world. The opening ceremony also featured the launch of a new video, 'LAND & SOIL - A legacy of action for a food secure and resilient future,' showcasing FAO's eight decades of commitment to sustainable soil and land management.
