Introduction: A training course was organized under the framework of the “Strengthening Afghanistan Institutions Capacity for the Assessment of Agriculture Production and Scenarios Development” in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock of Afghanistan. This specialized training was arranged as per the activities of component four of the to develop a crop modelling concept and crop statistical analysis for specific crops in Afghanistan.

The main objective of the training was to familiarize the participants with the innovative and
modern geo-spatial tools and techniques for analyzing and monitoring a specific crop land
cover change, precipitation and watershed management in the country.
Among the participants were representatives of governmental organizations working on land
cover, crop statistical analysis, meteorological & agro met, horticulture, watershed drainage
and land resources management. Quantum Geographic Information System (QGIS) was
selected as the software for the training and analysis. QGIS is an open source and userfriendly software tool in the field of GIS and remote sensing.
this specialized training on Monitoring and Analysis of Specific Crops, crop
modelling concept, models and statistical analysis was conducted for 2 days from
26th – 27th of February 2020.
The aim of this training workshop was to uplift the participant’s skills in using geo-spatial tools
and techniques for analyzing and monitoring a specific crop, crop modelling concept, especially
concerning the following domain in the country.

 Introduction to land cover and change detection
 Working on watershed drainage and random survey sampling points
 Interpolation and method of interpolation
 Working on precipitation raw data
 GPS points collection and Data training
 Temporal analysis on specific crops
 Image enhancement and classification
 Satellite image processing and analysis on NDVI
 Crop yield estimation  

Training Objective

The objective of the capacity building and training workshop is to enhance and strengthen the
capacities of key partner of National Agro-ecological zoning project.
The project was requested to provide training and advice (capacity development) on using
advanced technologies. The training consisted of following main activities:  

 Training on satellite imagery-based technologies and GIS mapping.
 Application of GIS in the field of crop concept modelling, crop yield
land cover, watershed drainage and land use using QGIS.
 Increasing the knowledge of advanced computer-based methods and t
environment and application of satellite imagery and free Google Earth program
 Generate GIS-based mapping products for the specific crops in the country
