Boosting transparency of forest data

Twenty-year-old, Rahma (Dhina) Maulidhina has been fascinated by forests, particularly in her home country of Indonesia, ever since she was young. Read more here.
Action is needed to successfully meet the climate targets outlined in international treaties, such as the Paris Agreement, which set the goal of limiting global warming to less than 1.5 degrees Celsius. To achieve this goal, the Paris agreement called on countries to make individual commitments (nationally determined contributions or NDCs) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. While such pledges offer promising results, global plans must turn into global action. However, in many cases, limitations and barriers continue to hinder such climate mitigation efforts. The project, “Building global capacity to increase transparency in the forest sector (CBIT-Forest),” was developed to increase the...
Forests in arid and semiarid lands, such as those found in many Arabic-speaking countries, provide vital environmental goods and services. They help prevent desertification, mitigate climate change and act as a source of food, energy and livelihoods. In many places around the world, forests also have religious and cultural significance. Many Middle Eastern or Near Eastern countries have low forest cover to begin with, making the protection of forest resources even more vital in these regions. However, deforestation rates around the world remain high,  estimated at 10 million hectares per year (2015-2020), according to the Global Forest Resources Assessment (FRA) 2020....
The book, National Forest Inventories of Latin America and the Caribbean: Towards the harmonization of forest information, is the result of the work of 21 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) that have combined their efforts to compile, review and illustrate their experiences implementing National Forest Inventories (NFI), as well as identifying common points and differences in the definitions, designs, methods and estimation protocols applied in those countries. NFIs are the fundamental pillar of a multipurpose National Forest Monitoring System (NFMS), providing precise information on the extension, distribution, composition, condition of forests and the changes that occur in these areas...
The climate crisis demands global action. One of the most recognizable initiatives implemented at this scale is the Paris Agreement, signed by 195 countries, which aims to limit global average temperature rise to less than 2 degrees Celsius. Under the Paris Agreement, countries have outlined individual climate goals, known as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). To ensure each country is contributing to the Paris Agreement, the Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF) was developed, which improves transparency and builds trust in the process. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has implemented the two-year project, “Building global capacity to increase transparency...
