New publication on Protecting Pollinators from Pesticides launched at SBSTTA 27

In February 2022, more than 400 people, including pesticide regulators, scientists, policymakers, and stakeholders from around the world, gathered to share experiences on regulatory approaches, best practices, and lessons learned to protect pollinators from the adverse effects of pesticides. In preparation for the Global Seminar on Strengthening Regulations to Protect Pollinators from Pesticides, a review was conducted on the various legislative approaches designed to safeguard pollinators from pesticide use, as well as broader legislation that can be applied directly or indirectly to support measures protecting pollinators from the harmful effects of pesticides.

As a follow up to this, at the 25th anniversary of the International Pollinator Initiative (IPI) during the 27th Session of the CBD Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA 27), Kim-Anh Tempelman, Programme Coordinator of EU-funded ACP MEAs 3 launched the publication Protecting pollinators from pesticides Issues and options to consider when drafting pesticide legislation, beekeeping legislation, and biodiversity legislation. This guidance document is the first of its kind to explore how selected features observed in national pesticide legislation, beekeeping legislation, and biodiversity legislation can be adapted to provide stronger tools which can be used to help protect pollinators from pesticides.

During the deliberations on item 9, “Biodiversity and Agriculture”, of the SBSTTA 27 agenda, several governments expressed support for FAO’s work on the International Pollinator Initiative and requested that the CBD Secretariat participate in the upcoming process to establish a global pollinator platform.
