Report of the Second Meeting of the Climate Change Working Group
The first meeting of the Steering Committee meeting of the project CCLME held in Dakar, Senegal, November 4, 2010 had agreed on the establishment of six technical working groups to assist the process of developing a Transboundary Diagnostic Analysis (TDA) and the development of a Strategic Action Plan (SAP) for CCLME. The meeting also adopted their terms of reference. In addition, it was agreed that the project CCLME and the participating countries would contribute to the support and enhancement of two CECAF working Groups on stock assessment of demersal and pelagic resources.
The second meeting of the climate Change Working Group was held in Praia, Cape Verde, from 16 to 18 October 2012. The members of the Working Group were appointed by the member countries and partner institutions of CCLME. The overall objective of the meeting was to review the progress on the drafting of project CCLME concept notes and climate change document entitled "Impacts of climate change on marine living resources and biodiversity, habitat and water quality in the area of the Canary Current Large Marine Ecosystem: State of Knowledge and strategic orientations", and also establish a work plan for 2012-2013, redistributing tasks for the production of these documents with deadlines.
Representatives of Mauritania, Guinea, Cape Verde and Gambia as well as partner institutions, IRD and PRCM, attended the meeting. Participants presented papers on their main activities regarding the drafting of concept notes and the document on climate change of CCLME. The progress report shows relatively good progress for the drafting of concept notes. Regarding the document on the impacts of climate change, the work led to the good documentation of section 1 (impacts of climate change on living marine resources and biodiversity, habitat and water quality essential for these resources). However, the working group noted the insufficient work done in other sections, in particular 3 to 5. The meeting was an opportunity to make recommendations on the improvement of the communications presented.
On the other hand, at the end of this progress status, a work plan taking into account a new timetable has been set. It plans the organization of a validation meeting in March 2013 and thus highlights the need for contributions to be available before early January 2013.
