EAF-Nansen, NRF-SAIAB and Ocean Census Celebrates World Fisheries Day 2025

Following the success of the first Post-Survey Workshop on Taxonomy Research in 2024, the EAF-Nansen Programme will once again partner with the NRF-South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity (NRF-SAIAB) and The Nippon Foundation-Nekton Ocean Census to host the second EAF-Nansen Programme Post-Survey Workshop on Taxonomy Research in Makhanda, South Africa from 10 to 21 November 2025.

Taking place in the lead-up to World Fisheries Day on 21 November, a series of activities and events will be held alongside the workshop to celebrate the role of scientific collaboration in promoting sustainable fisheries and ocean conservation, including:

Outreach Visit to Local High School
19 November 2025 | 11:00–13:00 | Andrew Moyake Centre of Excellence, Makhanda (in-person)
FAO and NRF-SAIAB representatives will visit the Andrew Moyake Centre of Excellence to engage students through an interactive session on marine science and biodiversity, followed by a Q&A on ocean health and the EAF-Nansen Programme’s work.


The EAF-Nansen Programme Coffee Deck Seminar: Supporting Young African Ocean Professionals

A coffee break session co-organized by the FAO EAF-Nansen Programme, NRF-SAIAB and the Early Career Ocean Professionals Programme (ECOP Africa Node) that will introduce the EAF-Nansen Programme and the ECOP, South Africa Node launched in June 2025.

Showcasing Science: Taxonomy in Action for Sustainable Aquatic Food Systems

Workshop participants will present their research through oral and poster sessions, showcasing how taxonomy and scientific collaboration contribute to sustainable fisheries management. The event will also include networking opportunities and informal discussions over coffee.

World Fisheries Day Celebration
21 November 2025 | 09:00–17:00 | Rhodes University, Makhanda  (in-person)
The EAF-Nansen Programme and partners will commemorate World Fisheries Day 2025 with an information desk featuring programme roll-ups, fact sheets, QR cards, postcards, videos, and a FAO World Fisheries Day selfie booth at the Rhodes University in Makhanda. The celebration will highlight the contributions of science, research, and collaboration to sustainable fisheries and healthy aquatic ecosystems.
