From 27 June to 1 July 2022, global leaders will convene in Lisbon, Portugal, for the United Nations Ocean Conference, co-hosted by the Governments of Portugal and Kenya. The overarching theme of the conference is: Scaling up ocean action based on science and innovation for the implementation of Goal 14: stocktaking, partnerships and solutions.”

During the entire week of plenary sessions intertwined with interactive events, the  international community will try to accelerate efforts towards increasing scientific knowledge for the sustainable management of the oceans, as part of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) - an UN-wide initiative that provides a common framework for international dialogue and global action in order to ensure that ocean science can fully support nations to meet Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.

About the side-event

This side event will highlight the contribution and support of the EAF-Nansen Programme to 32 partner countries and regional organizations in Africa and the Bay of Bengal towards achieving sustainable management of fisheries, including through improved knowledge of the ocean. The event will also offer an opportunity to discuss the objectives and areas of work of the next phase of the Programme (2023-2028) and to highlight opportunities for partnerships, using the UN Ocean Decade as a collaborative platform.

The EAF-Nansen Programme is a key contributor to the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. In 2021, the programme was endorsed as one of the ‘Ocean Decade Actions,’ thanks to its commitment to promote and support capacity development of the partner countries for improved governance and management, as well as for generation and use of knowledge.

The programme is focused on meeting two over-arching Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):  SDG 2 (“Zero Hunger") and SDG 14 (“Life below water") and contributes to several other goals such as SDG 1 ("No poverty"), SDG 5 (“Gender Equality"), SDG13: ("Climate Action”) on the path to achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
