Beef Production systems

  • With a cattle herd of 359 million head, South America accounts for 24 percent of the global cattle stocks.
  • The region produces 23 percent of the total global beef production, and is the origin of 22 percent of total world beef exports.
  • Livestock products are a basic source of food in the region, currently providing 21 percent of the total daily calorie supply and 50 percent of the protein intake.
  • Many of the region´s countries have achieved respectable rates of agricultural productivity growth in the recent years. Nevertheless, raising productivity will be essential to meet domestic food needs or to maintain or enhance export competitiveness.
