FAO-EU FLEGT Programme

FAO-EU FLEGT Programme renamed to reflect EU support

24/02/2017

The FAO Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) Programme will now be known as the FAO-EU FLEGT Programme to reflect the ongoing support of the European Union (EU) to the programme together with the governments of Sweden and the United Kingdom.

The FAO-EU FLEGT Programme has been working since 2008 to improve forest governance by supporting the European Commission’s Action Plan on FLEGT to promote the legal consumption and production of timber. The programme provides support to timber-producing countries to implement projects that target forest governance measures outlined in the Action Plan.

In 2016, EU renewed its commitment to the programme for the launch of its third phase (2016-2020) with a $30-million funding agreement including $18 million from the EU, $7.25 million from the United Kingdom and $5.3 million from the Government of Sweden.

To date, the FAO-EU FLEGT Programme has supported over 200 projects in some 40 countries throughout Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean and Asia.
