Improving food safety in Bangladesh

Food Standards and Risk Assessment

Standards and norms are based on risk analysis. The Project has prepared a roadmap to develop capacity of national standards formulation with single standard for specific product/process is under preparation. The National Codex Contact Point and National Codex Committee located in the BSTI have been supported to ensure multi-sectoral involvement in Codex activities and increase Bangladesh’s participation in standards setting activities of the Codex Alimentarius Commission as well as use of Codex standards as a base for national standards.

The Project is supporting the development of risk-based standards through technical support for chemical as well as microbiological risk-assessment. As a first step, key food hazards in nation’s food supply chain are being identified through countrywide and region wide surveys. The data from these surveys is being used to develop Codes of Practice as well as appropriate rules and regulations. In the long run, this will help the country to set optimal standards and Maximum Residue Limits and that will improve public health and reap dividends for Bangladesh’s position in the global market.
