Forest and Landscape Restoration Asia and the Pacific

RESULT Asia-Pacific: First Investment Forum

Hybrid Event, 11/12/2024 - 12/12/2024

11-12 December 2024, Anantara Siam Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand

Background: Forest and landscape restoration (FLR) is gaining momentum in the context of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, co-led by UNEP and FAO, to contribute to the targets of the Bonn Challenge, Kunming-Montreal Biodiversity Framework, Land Degradation Neutrality, AFR100 initiative and Global Land Initiative among others. Restoration of the degraded landscapes is critical for ensuring a healthy natural resource base for more efficient, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable agrifood systems.

At the regional level, the Member States of the Asia-Pacific Forestry Commission endorsed a Regional Strategy and Action Plan for Forest and Landscape Restoration in Asia-Pacific (RSAP) with strategic priorities for (i) facilitating and supporting the mobilization of financing for FLR; and (ii) encouraging private sector participation and investment in FLR. The third Asia-Pacific Forestry Sector Outlook Study also emphasized the need for large investments in FLR, the continued lack of which poses a major barrier for countries in the region who aspire to restore a consolidated total of at least 114 million hectares of degraded lands.

A Regional Programmatic Framework for FLR “Restoring and Sustaining Landscapes Together (RESULT) Asia-Pacific” represents collective action by countries and partners to restore and sustainably manage a consolidated 100 million hectares of the region’s degraded forest, agricultural, urban and other lands by 2030. It seeks to support countries in meeting their ambitious restoration targets with scaled-up interventions on priority landscapes, sustained high-quality outcomes, and optimal benefits flowing to smallholders and local communities. The framework is designed in line with the RSAP and the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration

Funding at scale is needed from all appropriate sources to help meet this goal. The RESULT Asia-Pacific Implementers Network (RAIN) aims to enhance and strengthen finance partnerships and coordinated investments in FLR, including through South-South and Triangular Cooperation, the private sector, project aggregation, blended financing, and other opportunities. The First RESULT Asia-Pacific Investment Forum is a part of this effort.

Objective: Identify opportunities/collaboration modalities to strengthen investments under RESULT Asia-Pacific.

Target group: 40-60 participants, representing countries, partners, RAIN members, investment and implementing partners committed to advancing the goals of RESULT Asia-Pacific.

Format, date and venue: Hybrid, 11-12 December 2024 at Anantara Siam Hotel, Bangkok

Outputs expected: (i) Strategic priorities for upscaling FLR investments (ii) inspirational examples of upscaling restoration efforts in Asia-Pacific through innovative finance and (iii) Ways for enhancing synergies across ongoing actions of RAIN partners.
