Capacity development enables relevant stakeholders to improve their knowledge and abilities related to many aspects of forest and landscape restoration. This module provides access to training programmes, learning courses and other extension materials, and has been developed in the context of the GEF6 funded program “The Restoration Initiative”.

This manual will aid trainers of sustainable land management (SLM) professionals to organize and conduct effective courses on monitoring and evaluation (M&E) from an integrated landscape management perspective. The manual provides a curriculum for building the capacities of SLM project and program managers, as well as M&E specialists, to practice M&E in ways that support a landscape approach to SLWM. It presents a sequence of learning activities that enable trainers to introduce concepts and practices that build leadership for monitoring and evaluating SLM initiatives which stand to impact agricultural productivity, ecological conservation and livelihood security as well as institutional strengthening outcomes. Through training courses built around the curriculum, SLM leaders will gain insight into designing and implementing M&E systems that help to bring about multiple desired impacts from SLM initiatives.

Imperata cylindrica grasslands are found throughout Southeast Asia. They are perpetuated by Imperata's, ability to resprout quickly after fire. Fire is the main reason that tree plantations fail on Imperata grasslands. Local people may be the cause of fire, but they are also the best partners to prevent it. They rehabilitate Imperata grassland rehabilitation when they own the trees and crops that will replace Imperata. The more valuable the new land use is to local people, the harder they will work to maintain it and prevent fire. This manual is written to benefit people who live in an environment dominated by Imperata and who want to replace grasslands with agroforestry and forests. The techniques covered in this manual are most useful for medium-sized grasslands, confined to one village or community. The manual's content and format is designed for extensionists, agriculturists, foresters, development workers, and others who can assist communities and smallholders to design and implement Imperata rehabilitation activities.

This publication provides guidance for terrestrial, marine, and freshwater protected area managers at both system and site levels on the restoration of natural and associated values of protected areas. As this sometimes necessitates restoration beyond protected area borders (e.g., to address ecosystem fragmentation and maintain well-connected protected area systems), this guide uses the term ‘restoration for protected areas’ for activities within protected areas and for activities in connecting or surrounding lands and waters that influence protected area values. It provides information on principles and best practice, with examples, and advice on the process of restoration, but is not a comprehensive restoration manual and does not give detailed methodologies and techniques.

This set of training materials makes Forest Genetic Resources (FGR) training relevant, attractive and accessible to non-specialists. It enables teachers and trainers to cover FGR issues in their courses, and increase understanding of how to manage diverse and complex forest and other tree based ecosystems sustainably. This training guide has been developed for: - Lecturers and students in tertiary education programmes on forestry, agriculture, environmental studies, and broader land management programmes. - Trainers and trainees in short courses (on-the-job training) on forest biodiversity and forest genetic resources; - Forestry practitioners: forest/land-use managers, certification organizations, NGOs. The guide has a global geographic scope and covers issues of global and local relevance with regard to conservation and sustainable use of FGR. Organized in a modular format, the guide provides case studies, teacher notes, audiovisuals that are flexible and easy to use in a range of formal or informal training and learning situations. Thus, the trainer can select topics and case studies that are of particular interest and relevance to students.

Regional and sub-regional capacity-building workshops on ecosystem conservation and restoration to support achievement of the Aichi Biodiversity Targets. The expected outcomes of the workshops were: - Increased capacity in countries to use appropriate assessment, policy and planning tools to promote ecosystem conservation and restoration at all appropriate levels; - Development of national targets and plans for ecosystem conservation and restoration within the framework of Aichi Biodiversity Targets 5, 11 and 15; - Integration of these targets and plans into updated national biodiversity strategies and action plans and mainstreaming into broader national policies, plans and programmes; - Strengthened partnerships for ecosystem conservation and restoration at national, local and regional levels; and - Updated information for the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties on the status of progress towards achievement of Aichi Biodiversity Targets 5, 11 and 15.
