Success story – Forest and landscape restoration in Niger

17/11/2022

The Forest and Landscape Restoration Mechanism of FAO has been implemented in Niger since 2018.

The Great Green Wall initiative, Africa's flagship programme to combat climate change and desertification and address food insecurity and poverty, seeks to create a mosaic of productive landscapes across North Africa, the Sahel and the Horn of Africa. As a part of this initiative, FAO trained skilled community members in techniques to restore and permanently maintain the land.

By making half-moons in the soil to retain rainwater, seeding and planting trees, and managing the community use of natural resources, the project has already seen results in the regenerating landscape and the return of fauna and flora.
