Forest Kids game update empowers children to become restoration champions
01/10/2025
Denver, 1 October 2025 – An updated version of the Forest Kids game, featuring a brand-new module on forest restoration, was launched today at the Society for Ecological Restoration’s World Conference in Denver. The launch took place during the session “Empowering the next generation of restoration professionals through the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.”
Developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Forest Kids game already engages children worldwide by letting them explore forest biomes, discover local species and understand the importance of healthy ecosystems. With the new restoration module, players can now take on the challenge of bringing degraded landscapes back to life.
“Restoration is about the future – and the future belongs to youth,” said Christophe Besacier, FAO Senior Forestry Officer. “By making restoration tangible and fun, this game helps children understand that their choices matter, and that caring for ecosystems is a collective responsibility.”
In the new module, players start with a degraded landscape and earn stars to bring back native trees, plants and animals. Each restoration decision teaches lessons about biodiversity, climate and the importance of forests. The design encourages teamwork and problem-solving, reinforcing the idea that successful restoration is a shared effort.
The update supports the objectives of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021–2030), which highlights the role of education in raising awareness and building the capacity for restoration worldwide. By integrating restoration concepts into an accessible learning tool, the Forest Kids game aims to inspire stewardship from an early age and create pathways for youth leadership in ecosystem management.
The game and its new restoration module will be showcased in schools and at youth-focused events, including the World Food Forum 2025. Forest Kids is available in six languages, ensuring wide accessibility for young learners across regions.
