Committee on Mediterranean Forestry Questions – Silva Mediterranea

ABOUT

The Committee of Mediterranean Forestry Questions – Silva Mediterranea is a Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) statutory body. Its role is to insert Mediterranean forest questions into a participatory process, acting as a catalyst for their management, proposing related calls for action and addressing its five working groups’ activities on timely and emerging forest topics.

THE MEDITERRANEAN FOREST WEEK

Silva Mediterranea, along with its regional partners, is committed to organizing a Mediterranean Forest Week (MFW) every two years in a Member Country. The MFW has been conceived as a common regional platform for cooperation on Mediterranean forests, aiming at improving the dialogue between the Mediterranean forest research community, policymakers and the relevant stakeholders, aiming as well at communicating to the international community and society at large the relevance and challenges affecting Mediterranean forests.

SILVA MEDITERRANEA WORKING GROUPS

The working groups are subsidiary bodies of Silva Mediterranea and represent the instrument of the Committee to accomplish its tasks. 

Five working groups are currently active: 

  • Working group on forest fires, led by Spain;
  • Working group on cork oak and non-timber forest products, led by Portugal;
  • Working group on forest genetic resources, led by Italy;
  • Working group on urban and peri-urban forestry, led by Spain; and
  • Working group on desertification and restoration in Mediterranean drylands, led by Türkiye.

THE MEDITERRANEAN YOUTH TASK FORCE

The Mediterranean Youth Task Force (MYTF) is a self-led youth group of the Silva Mediterranea Secretariat and is supported by the European Forest Institute Mediterranean Facility (EFIMED). It is composed by engaged young people who are either from or living in the Mediterranean region. Participants are students, researchers, young professionals or those with other active roles in the forest sector of the Mediterranean region.

The MYTF is led by a Direction Board, which leads the work and efforts of the Task Force.
