The COVID-19 pandemic continues to cause major disruption in societies around the world and inflict severe damage to the global economy. Governments have introduced various measures intended to slow the spread of the virus, including social isolation directives, limitations on business opening hours and travel restrictions. The fisheries and aquaculture sector, along with many other industries, is having to deal with a bleak demand outlook and an array of supply challenges.
East Asia, particularly China, Japan, and the Republic of Korea, concentrates a significant volume of exports, imports and consumption of fish and fish products globally. These different and combined patterns of market players as big exporters, importers and consumers, led to a positive environment for the creation of mitigation measures and assessment of new opportunities to counteract the outcomes of the pandemic.
Objectives of the webinar:
In this context, FAO GLOBEFISH organized a webinar to explore some of the solutions, opportunities, and best practices identified by China, Japan and the Republic of Korea in mitigating the negative spillovers of the pandemic. The webinar provided a unique discussion panel in assessing the changes and trends of fisheries and aquaculture value chains framed by these new measures and the pandemic itself.
The first session, held on 19 November 2020, explored issues at a global level and in the markets of Japan and the Republic of Korea. The second session on 20 November 2020 explored the Chinese market. webinar agenda
