Special Side Event: “From Data to Decision”
A key highlight of FAO’s presence was the side event titled “From Data to Decision: Unveiling FAO’s Updated Methodology for Fish Stock Status”, which took place on 7 May. Open to all attendees and the public, the event showcased FAO’s newly developed methodology for assessing global fish stock status.
Dr Manuel Barange, Assistant Director-General and Director of FAO’s Fisheries and Aquaculture Division, presented the updated approach, which adopts a transparent, tiered system tailored to a variety of data conditions. The methodology integrates robust scientific models, expert evaluations, and a focus on long-term sustainability through the Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY) framework.
The session featured opening remarks by Dr Audun Lem, Deputy Director of FAO’s Fisheries and Aquaculture Division, who reinforced the role of science-based approaches in supporting sustainable fisheries.
The discussion was moderated by Ms Pinar Karakaya (FAO Liason Office in Geneva) and included panel contributions from:
- Ms Olga Lukashevich, Counsellor, Permanent Mission of Peru to the United Nations in Geneva
- Ms Juana Poza Poza, Deputy Assistant Director, Fisheries Research and Data Collection, Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Spain
- Mr Jonathan Werner, Manager, Fisheries Funding Mechanism Trust Fund, WTO

Each panellist offered valuable perspectives on regional and international experiences in fisheries management, with a focus on how enhanced data collection and policy integration are essential for sustainable and economically viable fisheries.
Dr Audun Lem concluded the session by underlining the importance of reliable data, science-based assessments, and coordinated policy frameworks in achieving sustainability in marine resource management.
