The second edition of the I Exist Too Forum was held from 7 to 8 May 2025 in San Ġwann, Malta, under the theme “Humanising the Maritime Industry”, to promote inclusive and sustainable fisheries value chains. The event was organized by the human rights organization “I Exist Too” and brought together maritime professionals, policymakers, national authorities, international organizations, industry leaders and civil society to advance equity, inclusion, diversity and human rights in the maritime and fisheries sector, with a specific focus on LGBTQ+ professionals.
The I Exist Too Forum featured panel discussions, an art exhibition and keynote speeches addressing key issues such as inclusive regulatory frameworks, responsible business practices, and the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion in shaping the future of the maritime and aquatic food sectors.
FAO GLOBEFISH was invited to participate in the panel discussion “Casting a Wider Net: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the fishing sector” which focused on strategies to foster more inclusive fisheries value chains, address systemic barriers, and identify actionable recommendations for promoting decent working conditions and stakeholder participation across the sector.
During the session, FAO GLOBEFISH highlighted the importance of distinguishing between small-scale and industrial fisheries when addressing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), as well as emphasized the importance of applying DEI across all stages of the fisheries and aquaculture value chains where inequalities often persist, especially among women, informal workers, and other vulnerable, marginalized and underrepresented groups.
The session also provided an opportunity to promote FAO’s Blue Transformation initiative and the upcoming FAO Guidance on Social Responsibility in the Fisheries and Aquaculture Value Chains (FAO Guidance). Participants expressed strong interest in the FAO Guidance and welcomed FAO’s efforts to promote inclusive growth in the sector.
FAO GLOBEFISH appreciates the opportunity to contribute to this important initiative. The I Exist Too Forum offered an important platform for dialogue between public institutions, private sector actors, and civil society, fostering collective action towards more inclusive and sustainable food systems.
