WTO members have adopted a decision granting FAO observer status in the newly established WTO Committee on Fisheries Subsidies (CFS).

The CFS will oversee the implementation of the WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies, which entered into force in September 2025. It will also provide a dedicated forum for WTO members to discuss notifications, transparency, implementation issues and broader questions related to the Agreement.

During this new phase, FAO stands ready to continue to provide technical expertise to support the work of the CFS, drawing on its longstanding mandate in fisheries governance, data, stock assessment, monitoring, control and surveillance, and IUU.

FAO looks forward to working closely with the WTO and its members to support the effective implementation of the Agreement and contribute to healthy oceans, sustainable fisheries and conservation of fish stocks.
